Why I Only Have 451 Songs

I’m sure most of you have exploding, huge iTunes libraries or CD-catalogues. You probably brag about it now and then.

You’d expect “someone like me” to have something close to 100GB of music, or thousands of songs. Well, wrong, and most of my friends are startled, because I should be swimming in music all the time.

Well, actually I am, but let me explain.

  • Quality over Quantity: The old saying holds true here as well, I enjoy listening to 100 great songs instead of 1000 good songs.

  • Decluttered library: Those of you who do have large libraries probably won’t tell me that they’re completely uncluttered, tagged and sorted perfectly. I believe in having complete info on each song, and I believe in keeping just the things I will listen to.

  • I had a lot more once: I used to own about 80GB of music, amounting to some 30′000 songs. I had Queen and U2 discographies that I had borrowed from friends or downloaded from the internet (in Switzerland, this was legal back then).

  • Time factor: I don’t have the time to listen to so much stuff! And I don’t know that many “great” songs - without which I can’t go for more than 10 minutes while listening to music. Maybe I’m picky. Maybe I’m just music-illiterate.

  • The Musician Part: As a musician, I have aone big chunk of my library that roates frequently. I’m a big explorer of music, and thus my playlists will look very different next week. Also, I have playlists that aren’t really meant for “just listening”, but rather play-alongs, chord exercises or something similar.

  • The fresh build up:So I used to have over 30′000 tracks. What happened there? Well, let’s just say I went nuts with the mass of music I had, and practically deleted all the music I had. I started building my library from scratch, which is a bold thing to do, but I did it because my iTunes needed a rehab. Ever since, my library has become an elite club of finer things* that I enjoy keeping that way. Songs need to go survive a hard and long process before they may stay permanently.

So I’m an iTunes freakazoid. What are your music library stories? Do you have any problems managing music from a musicians perspective?

*Watch The Office? Pun intended.
