What’s your favorite a capella chamber choral piece?

Choral singers and directors: if you had a 30 voice a capella chamber group, with proficiency ranging from gifted amateur to trained, professional singer, what would you build into your repertory?

Any period, any genre. Here are a few of my favorites–a contemporary American, a French Impressionist, and a French 20th century composer.

Austin Vocal Arts Ensemble Concert April 3

AVAE will present an evening of vocal chamber music by American composers on Thursday, April 3 at Hope Presbyterian Church. Also performing at the 8:00 p.m. concert are singers from St. Edward’s University. From Shaker songs to the tonal and rhythmic complexity of Lauridsen’s setting of “Ubi Caritas,” the night will be an aural feast. Mostly a capella, the works that include piano are tastefully delivered by David Utterback. Kenny Sheppard puts the choir through their paces–in Chris Foley’s exhaustive rubric to assess professional skills, Kenny would be three-star, all the way.

If you’re in the Austin area, drop on by, you’ll be glad you did. I’ll be on the front row, nestled in the middle of all that gorgeous sound, singing for the sheer joy of it, passing it on to other music lovers.
