The school will be named the <a href="http://www.utexas.edu/news/2008/03/18/music_butlers/" title="Sarah and Ernest Butler School of Music">Sarah and Ernest Butler School of Music</a> to honor their 25 year support of music at UT-Austin. More than half of the monies will go toward students&#8217; needs. This follows a $2M endowment from the couple for the music school&#8217;s opera theater. Aptly, Dr. Butler is a retired <a href="http://www.entnet.org/" title="Otolaryngology">otolaryngologist</a>, or eye, ear, and nose specialist&#8211;the singer&#8217;s best friend.</p> <p>Even though this is the largest endowment for public music schools, it bears noting that gifts to the sciences far exceed those to the arts. UT-Austin received $245 million from the estate of John A. and Katherine G. Jackson. The university’s <a href="http://www.jsg.utexas.edu/" title="Jackson School of Geosciences">Jackson School of Geosciences</a> is named for the Jacksons. It&#8217;s pretty cool, especially the <a href="http://www.ctlab.geo.utexas.edu/overview/" title="Computer tomography lab">high resolution x-ray computer tomography</a>, which allows you to visualize the inside of opaque objects.</p> <p>This week in the <a href="http://www.music.utexas.edu/" title="Sarah and Ernest Butler School of Music">Sarah and Ernest Butler School of Music</a>.
