Resignation

Resignation

Dear Readers,
as of this week, I have resigned as editor of The Good Musician and this blog will cease to exist unless b5media decides to do something else with it.
The past six months were a delight writing for you and I know some of you enjoyed what I have to say.
Thank You. Thank You for all the comments, the ideas, the community feeling.
I wish you all the best, and remember: Even when it seems all is lost, no-one can take away your music.
It’s about the music.

Notes & Facts About American Idol

Notes & Facts About American Idol

Casting shows are often quite entertaining, to say the least.
Picture this: You’re wacthing American Idol and see a 16-year old participant singing and showing off her Mariah Carey song and you think “ugh”. This girl can’t sing.
Yet, the jury decides to give her a recall and she jumps with joy while half the viewership wants to punch her in the face (and the other half wants to bed her).
American Idol is never fair. Seldom musically correct. But aways dramatic for show. Here some hard facts you should’t forget:

Most AI contestants can’t really sing, even if they seem super-confident and impressive …read more

5 Ideas to Kickstart Your Musicality

5 Ideas to Kickstart Your Musicality

After a long time, I managed to get back into the musician habit again. This was hard for me because I had a lot of other obligations going on at the same time, and music wasn’t on my priorities list.
I’d hardly have finished one project when the next project rolls in and you’re time is once again consumed by non-musical things. This lead me to a realization:

If you can’t do something, it’s because you don’t want to do it.

If you think you’d play more music if you had the time, you need to MAKE the time, or you’ll never get …read more

70 More Musicians You Wouldn’t Want to Switch Places With

After our recent post about undesirable musician spots, let me present to you what my colleagues across the network have been saying on the topic. Here’s a rundown of their posts:
Beatles Invasion gives us a list separating the living from the dead.
Metal Martyr shows the dark faces of Metal ranging from Ozzy Osbourne to Bach.
Even on the Island there are some undesirable spots, Brit Music Scene shows them.
Mike at Toronto Unplugged seems to have very distinct opinions about what artists aren’t favorable ones.
The Rock Dose scared me with a pic of Pete Doherty.
Ozzy reappears on Our Digital Music’s list.
And last …read more

10 (Good?) Musicians I Wouldn’t Want to Switch Places With

10 (Good?) Musicians I Wouldn’t Want to Switch Places With

Here’s a fun round of lists we at b5music have been sharing the past week: Name the ten musicians you would not want to switch places with!
The Good Musician is hosting this group project and here’s my personal list:

1. Billy Joe Armstrong
Seriously, the kid has to play the same 4 chords in over 30 sngs at a concert. He’s got fame and money, but musical monotony will catch up sooner or later.

2. Janet Jackson
Besides having your name pulled into dirt by your brother, having to play second fiddle all the time whilst reminding everyone of Mister popstar pedophile thanks to …read more

Today we’d like to put the spotlight on the mind behind “She plays Music“, a blog about female musicians one I promise to follow more closely in the future. Deborah brings a lot of intricate opinions about this topic to the table, and you should check it out. Here’s the interview with her:

Growing Up vs. Being a Good Musician

Growing Up vs. Being a Good Musician

At a weekly round of drinks, I hear this joke:
A young child says to his mother, “Mom, when I grow up I’d like to be a musician.” She replies, “Well honey, you know you can’t do both.”
Well, it kind of struck a chord (yeah, pun). It sparked a long stream of thought inside me, and I’m not sure if I should share it with you just yet, as I’m unsure of what I think myself.
The first thought I had was why a musical career choice needs to be a childish decision, or at least why society thinks of it …read more

5 Ways to Make Children More Interested in Music

5 Ways to Make Children More Interested in Music

Photography by carf.
I often wonder what the best way is to teach my little brother, age 10, music.
The boy goes to piano classes, and he’s actually quite talented, being able to read music quite fleuntly and playing all major and minor chords with ease after little more than a year of training.
During this time, I did find ways to contribute and help him on his journey, and there are a few tricks you may find useful yourself.
