The B5Media network:

8 More Great Music Recommendation Sources

In case you missed my recent list of Music Recommendation Sources (which has been surprisingly popular), you should head over there and check it out.

A lot of you have made some additions and comments about the list, which I would like to aggregate here.

Audioscrobbler

This one’s actually just an alternative way for using last.fm. If you don’t like being tied to using their player software, you can use the plugin that ties into iTunes and never shows up again. I remember using this from the time last.fm was actually still called Audioscrobbler :-) .

Musicovery

Apparently this Gem slipped my trained eye… shame on me, I guess. Musicovery allows you to choose music at random based on your mood (energetic or calm, dark or positive). This simple matrix makes discovering music as easy as clicking with your mouse. The results are displayed in an interactive web, Liveplasma-style.

iMeem

I remember iMeem from an interview with it’s developer a long time ago, and it looked promising at the time. Unfortunately in an overflow of social media sites, this is just another pebble in the park (where did I get that expression from). iMeem serves it’s purpose: it’s a social site for music, video and more, but it doesn’t dive right in into the subject matter of music doscovery, nor does it have an intruiging interface or interaction model. I guess after all we’ve seen, our expectations are high.

elbo.ws

This is actually just a blog that aggregates other blogs. I’m not sure whether they’re just stealing content, but it’s RSS feed is probably another good source of reviews and new music. The fact that you’ll get just one or two fresh recommendations every day delivered to your doorstep is reason enough for me. Less work, more music.

Musicnerds

This is a site recommended by a user – one of you guys. I like the basic idea, but the only thing that appealed to me here was the “Random” link in the sidebar. The links are extremely hard to discern among all the ads, so I’ve picked out the link for you here: Get a random album. If the webmaster is reading: Dude, your site obviously screams “give me money”, but you *could* turn it into a nice, cute, uncomplicated resource with a bit more user-friendliness.

BigChampagne

This site aggregates the top songs from legal and illegal file sharing networks. Even an immaculately great mind as mine needs to catch up on what’s running in the “real” music world, so these charts are an interesting resource to find out “what’s hot”. Good tip.

Pitchfork Media

Another review site. I like their selection of albums, and feel strangely attracted to all their choices. Worth visiting, good reviews, but no random recommendations or interaction.

IfYouLove

This is a very nice site. Another reader recommendation, this one has a simple logical approach of “If you love A, you might like B”. Based on your preferences it will recommend new music and sites. Good tip, even if it doesn’t come across as fancy as many other sites.

There you have ‘em, some more additions to our ever-growing world of music recommendation sites. Me like!
